Is Free really free?

Yes. Free is a real product, not a timed trial — and the entire family-finance side is free: the Family Dashboard, the pay-down-or-invest break-even comparison for any debt, the rate ladder putting every account, card and debt on one axis, bank-statement import with automatic categorisation, budgets, bills, debts, subscriptions, spending insights and your household net worth over time, with unlimited family members. On the investing side, Free includes Today with your Runway figure, portfolio tracking, the Morning Pulse daily briefing, the Tax Centre with CGT estimates, and income and dividend tracking. No account, no card. The honest limits are on the investing side: the first 2 members' investing dashboards open at a time, 1 portfolio, and up to 15 tracked instruments with 5 of them refreshing live each update — the rest keep their last price and tell you when it was taken. Nothing is ever hidden or deleted because of your plan.

Is family finance really all free? What's the catch?

There is no catch, and the reason is structural: your household ledger, budgets, bills and net worth are computed entirely on your device — they cost nothing to serve, so there is nothing to charge for. Pro is the investing side, where live market data and the heavy analytics engines live. Every household page, every spending period, bank-statement import, the pay-down-or-invest comparison, the rate ladder and unlimited family members are free on every plan, permanently counted in every household total.

Is there a limit on price refreshes?

Yes, and it is the same on both plans: 20 metered refreshes a day. It is a spend guardrail rather than a tier feature — twenty manual refreshes is one every 45 waking minutes, the app never polls in the background, and prices always keep their own honest as-of time. Free refreshes 5 instruments per update (held positions first); Pro refreshes everything you track.

Where is my data stored?

In a local SQLite database on your own device. Your 4–6 digit PIN gates access to the app; it does not encrypt the database file — protecting that at rest is Windows' job, through device encryption or BitLocker. The app also writes automatic backups to a folder in your Documents that survives uninstalling. Nothing is uploaded — the only thing sent out is the ticker symbols you track plus an anonymous install identifier, used to fetch prices.

What happens if I stop paying?

You downgrade gracefully to Free. All of your data stays exactly where it is — Pro screens simply lock until you resubscribe, and everything within the Free tier keeps working. You can export your data at any time.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Pulse Neuron is local-first, so your portfolio, records, and reports open without a connection. Market prices refresh whenever you're back online.

How do refunds and billing work?

Pro is purchased and managed entirely through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft handles payment, renewals, receipts, cancellations, and refunds under the standard Microsoft Store policy — Pulse Neuron never sees or stores your payment details.

Are the tax figures advice?

No. The Tax Centre estimates CGT and income tax under the jurisdiction you select — Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, or a generic European profile. They're estimates for planning, not tax advice; confirm outcomes with a qualified professional.

Can I switch between monthly and annual?

Yes — manage your subscription in your Microsoft account's services & subscriptions settings. Annual works out cheaper over a year.

Can I try it before adding my data?

Yes — that's what the demo portfolio is for. One click on the Getting Started page loads a separate sample database: a realistic family of investors with five years of trades, budgets, debts, and goals, with every Pro feature unlocked inside the demo. Your own data is never touched — a banner lets you exit at any time, and the demo always restarts with pristine sample data (each demo session expires after 7 days).

Can I see Pro before buying?

Please do. The Platform tour and Screenshots pages show every Pro screen, clearly marked and zoomable — and starting on Free first is a perfectly good path.

What happens when a company splits its shares?

Pulse Neuron notices — most trackers don't, and silently show a huge phantom loss. Splits are detected three ways (live at refresh time, retrospectively from the position itself, and confirmed against real market data), then fixed in one previewed step: trades, saved price history, and dividend records adjust together, an automatic backup is taken first, and there's an exact one-click undo. Your totals, purchase dates, and tax outcomes never change. Because it's about data correctness, split protection is included on Free.
